As the season progresses, fans may be able to look back to the Lady Timberwolves’ game against Killeen Ellison as a turning point.
“We have had a problem with letting teams back into games for as long as I have been here,” head coach Cami Jenschke said. “They showed some real tenacity and bounced back in that game. It seemed like that carried us through the rest of the tournament.”
After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, Lady Timberwolf errors allowed the Eagles to claw their way back in and make it a 4-4 game in the bottom of the third inning. It was then that Kara Stanley shut the door on any thought of a comeback with a two-run single, and pitcher Mackenzi Loften did the rest to shut the door on Killeen Ellison.
“During that game we just shifted gears it seemed,” Jenschke said.
The Lady T’Wolves would allow just one more run over the next 13 innings – a 2-0 win over South San Antonio, and a 5-1 victory over Corpus Christi Carroll in the consolation championship game.
Abby and Megan Schade were both 2-for-3 against South San Antonio, and each had an RBI. Loften got the complete game shutout and allowed just two hits.
Against Carroll, Megan Schade again went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Jessie Garrett was also 2-for-3 with a triple, and two RBI. Emily Newman had a breakout game going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Pitcher Kate Mayfield had four hits and struck out nine in six innings of work.
The Lady T’Wolves were in the consolation bracket because they came out on the wrong end of a tiebreaker in pool play. After three teams all posted 3-1 records on day one, the seeding was decided by runs scored. Since Cedar Park had only six runs as opposed to their counterparts’ seven, they drew the No. 3 seed.
“We figured we were the only 3-1 team in that bracket, we might as well go out there and win the thing,” Jenschke said.
The Lady T’Wolves’ hot streak comes at the right time, with district play starting this week. They will take on McNeil Friday night, and will play on the road against Round Rock and Vista Ridge next Monday and Wednesday.
